ABPA Statement on COVID-19

Updated 8/17/2020

***Certification***

With the continuing public health crisis and the restrictions and limitations on the size of gathering throughout the areas where ABPA certification exams have historically been held - ABPA has been challenged to provide sufficient recertification exam opportunities for testers and specialists.

The ABPA management and certification teams are working hard to schedule and re-schedule ABPA certification exams. Several certification exams are scheduled in various locations throughout the rest of the calendar year – please check our Events Calendar  for specific dates and locations.

There is a backlog of tester and specialists needing to recertify created by the cancellation of spring exams and the continued social distancing requirements and other CDC guidelines.  Due to these circumstances - if any of the scheduled exams are accessible to you – we highly encourage you to register for that exam and complete your recertification requirements.

In order to account for this limitation and in order to not affect the continuity of certification for our certified testers and specialists – ABPA is revising its initial extension to include all existing certifications (tester and specialist) that have an expiration date between March 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020. This extension will last until December 31, 2020. The tester or specialist is still responsible to register and successfully complete their re-certification exam before the certification expires once exams are rescheduled.

Public water systems and other regulatory authorities are encouraged to understand the extenuating circumstances that led to these decisions. If documentation is needed, a detailed extension letter has been drafted to address this issue. Click here to download the letter.

ABPA is committed to providing re-certification opportunities to our certified testers and specialists while protecting the health of our testers, specialists, applicants, proctors, and examination monitors and the public-at-large.

Essential Services

As we all abide by CDC social distancing guidelines, it can be challenging to identify "essential" businesses.  ABPA encourages its members to follow your local jurisdiction laws and directives.  We also encourage the continued testing of backflow prevention assemblies on all high-hazard applications.  ABPA recognizes, continued safe operation of public water systems across our country is a vital essential service.  Protection from contamination remains essential in these challenging times.

Annual Conference

The leadership of ABPA has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the 2020 Annual Conference and Trade Show and all pre & post-Conference events, scheduled for April 17-23, 2020 in Charlotte, NC due to the continued rapid spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

The safety of our conference attendees, tester and specialist applicants, volunteer proctors and examination monitors are of utmost importance to our Association, and our thoughts are with those affected worldwide.

In recent days, a number of significant changes have made cancellation of our Conference unavoidable, including the declarations of emergencies by the federal and many state governments along with new travel restrictions imposed by universities and employers around the country that prevent a growing portion of our registrants from participating in our Conference as presenters and attendees.

With the official cancellation of the 2020 National Conference and Trade Show, the ABPA office will be in contact with the registered attendees and vendors to facilitate 100% refund of the registration fees. The registrants who have submitted cancellations in the past 10 days will be included in receiving 100% refunds of the registration fees. If you are registered for the conference, you should have received an email outlining the refund process, if you have not, please email patti@abpa.org.

We ask that you please cancel your hotel reservations as soon as possible, and if you were planning on travelling to our meeting, then make the appropriate arrangements for your airline tickets.

In any event, ABPA offers the following web-site links to all of our members for the latest information to protect themselves and prevent the further spread of this virus.
